Introducing Our New Course: Fundamentals of Load Monitoring
Apr 02, 2025
By Ciaran Deely PhD
We're delighted to share the launch of our new online course at Sport Horizon: Fundamentals of Load Monitoring — a collaboration between myself, Ciaran Deely PhD, and Jo Clubb of Global Performance Insights.
This course has been developed to fill a gap we’ve both recognised over the years — the need for a clear, structured pathway to understanding and applying load monitoring principles in real-world performance environments. It’s a course we wish we had access to earlier in our own careers.
What makes this course unique is how it weaves together the theory behind load monitoring, applied frameworks that you can implement in your own environment, and the skills needed to visualise and communicate that data through intuitive Power BI dashboards. It’s not just about collecting numbers. It’s about painting a picture, adding context, and using that information to contribute meaningfully to conversations with your coaches, performance team, and athletes.
As Jo and I discussed early in the planning stages, we didn’t want this to be just another information-heavy course. We wanted it to be practical, accessible, and useful — regardless of whether you’re working in a pro team, university setting, or supporting individual athletes.
Here’s what you can expect to cover across the nine modules:
- Course Introduction and Welcome
- Training Theory and Load Monitoring
- Session Reporting
- Longitudinal Load Monitoring
- Speed Exposure Monitoring
- Subjective Athlete Monitoring
- Objective Athlete Monitoring
- Data Dissemination and Communication
- Final Reflections and Next Steps
Throughout the course, you’ll also learn how to build a series of interactive Power BI reports, including:
- RPE Analysis Report
- Session Report
- Session Report with Z-Scores
- Speed Exposure Dashboard
- ACWR Report Over Time
- Longitudinal % Change Weekly Report
- Subjective Wellness Report
- Objective CMJ Dashboard
- Training Response Dashboard
We guide you step-by-step through the Power BI process so you’re not just analysing data — you’re using it to gain insight, tell stories, and support your coaching conversations. This is what we believe data-informed practice should look like.
And check out the recent really popular video over on Jo's YouTube Channel, where we sit down to discuss load monitoring theory and frameworks, as well as giving a sneak preview of some of the Power BI reports we show you how to build out on the course. It was a very enjoyable chat on load monitoring and why everyone should learn Power BI. It is well worth a watch and listen, regardless of whether you are interested in the course or not.
The course has now launched and is available for £399. There is also a 3-month payment instalment plan available. Email Ciaran on [email protected] for the link to access this option.
There’s also a student discount option for university students — details and sign-up for that are available via the FAQ section on the course page.
